Bristol is one of the UK’s leading regional filming destinations.

High-end TV shows The Outlaws, Rivals, Alex Rider, Sanditon, Doctor Who and Boarders, and feature films The Wasp, Stan & Ollie and Hellboy are just some of the latest titles that have filmed in the city in recent years.

TV and feature film production is estimated to contribute more than £20m towards Bristol’s economy annually, and production levels have been consistently rising in recent years.

Bristol City Council’s Film Service consists of three departments supporting different aspects of the city’s film sector; Bristol Film Office, The Bottle Yard Studios and Bristol UNESCO City of Film.

For more than two decades, Bristol Film Office (est. 2003) has been working behind the scenes to assist film and TV productions of all sizes to film on location. A one-stop-shop assisting with everything from location and crewing advice to recces and logistical support, it ensures Bristol remains one of the UK’s most film-friendly cities.

The Bottle Yard Studios (est. 2010) is the largest film and TV studio in the West of England. It offers 11 stages for hire; eight at its main site and three at TBY2, its premium expansion facility which opened in 2022 offering fully sound-proofed shooting space. TBY2’s power supply is supported by a 1MWp solar array funded by Bristol Energy Cooperative, believed to be the biggest community-owned PV rooftop in the UK.

Over the past 20 years, Bristol Film Office and its partners The Bottle Yard Studios have assisted TV & film production worth an estimated £322 million to Bristol’s economy.

In 2022/23 Bristol Film Office issued more than 500 filming permits in the city and assisted with more than 800 filming days place on Council-owned streets, properties and green spaces. It is estimated that over the past 20 years, Bristol Film Office and its partners The Bottle Yard Studios have assisted TV & film production worth an estimated £322 million to Bristol’s economy.
